Yearly Co. x Lizzie Mandler: LA Breast Cancer Event
A mutual friend connected Alex and me after we were both initially diagnosed with breast cancer.
Although our diagnoses were not exactly the same, we quickly bonded over our shared experience of preparing for treatment and all the unknowns that came along with it.
Alex and I are both moms to two kids and women who have flourishing and exciting careers that we had to put on hold. We started out as strangers, but very quickly became friends, and over the last 18 months of knowing each other, rarely has a day gone by that we haven’t checked in, shared a resource, or vented to each other about something involving breast cancer. We both celebrated the end of each other’s chemo and supported each other on the days where we feared for the worst but hoped for the best.
Alex was my inspiration for our family trip to Lake Louise in March 2024. While on that trip, I heard the news from her that her cancer had spread to her lungs and become Stage IV. On our family’s travel day home, we happened to be passing through Toronto, and I asked Alex if I could come give her a hug. We met for the first time in person. She already felt like a dear friend I had known forever.
Watching Alex navigate life as a mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend while facing cancer treatment and a Stage IV diagnosis has been inspiring. She has taken every opportunity to turn an incredibly challenging situation into a learning experience and to advocate for herself as a patient. While facing this very difficult time in her life, she has always been thinking of others and championing friends.
As a stylist, Alex has incredible taste, and we share a mutual love of jewelry.
She spoke of her friend Lizzie Mandler many times and would often share her incredible work. Alex offered to introduce Lizzie and me so that we could chat about the industry and potentially talk about collaborating on something special.
I knew any friend of Alex’s would be a friend of mine, and the first time Lizzie and I spoke, we hit it off. We were excited to create something that would bring together our two brands, and we wanted Alex’s input on the design and the meaning behind these pieces.
We all wanted this collaboration to inspire women who have faced breast cancer and to remind them that the life they lived before—the joys, passions, and things that they love—can still be there even during and after breast cancer.
Beautiful jewelry can take on such meaning, and we wanted to use these pieces both to inspire women and to give back to women who are facing this battle that we know too well. The event in LA was a special way to launch these pieces at Lizzie’s store. We had friends stop by to celebrate and get custom LM jewelry cases monogrammed. We showed off the collaboration and closed out a week of sales, raising over $12,000 in donations for The Pink Fund.
