Building And Cataloguing My Wardrobe
It's so easy to buy clothes you think you need, only to get home and realize that they don’t really go with your closet or that you have something very similar.
I’ve always wanted an easy way to keep track of my closet, but every solution felt super time-consuming or wasn’t visually appealing to use.
But I recently discovered Alta! An app that helps you catalog your closet seamlessly.
The app had me photograph my actual clothes —every top, every pair of pants, every piece I'd been ignoring —and here’s why I really love it: those mediocre, poorly lit, hanging-from-my-closet-door photos? Alta transforms them into clean, polished, studio-quality images that look like they were pulled straight from a brand's website! Suddenly, my entire wardrobe was right there in front of me, looking shoppable and beautiful – no jumble of hangers or wonky photos. It’s so satisfying!
Making the Most of What You Already Have
Alta is built by a small, female-owned company, and you can tell it was created with real intention. Once your closet is digitized, the app generates outfit combinations pulled entirely from pieces you already have, styled together in ways you might never have thought of on your own.
My shopping mindset has completely shifted. Instead of looking for something new online every time I felt stuck, I started looking at what I could make work with what I already had. It sounds simple, but it's genuinely changed how I get dressed every morning.
An Avatar That Lets You Try Everything On
One of my favorite features is the virtual avatar. You upload your measurements and a photo, and Alta creates a look-alike version of you that you can actually dress. Mix and match pieces, try something unexpected, and see how an outfit really comes together, before you ever touch a hanger.
Shopping With Intention
When I do shop now, I do it so much more thoughtfully. Alta identifies the actual gaps in your wardrobe and surfaces recommendations based on what you genuinely need. You can test a new piece on your avatar before committing, or save it to a wishlist and get notified when it goes on sale. No more impulse buys that don't work with anything else you own.
A Dream for Travel Packing
You know I love to travel, and packing has always felt like its own project. Alta makes it so much easier. Enter your destination, planned activities, and luggage size, and it builds a packing list and a travel lookbook, both pulled entirely from your closet. It will pull together combinations you might never have thought of on your own, and it takes so much of the mental load out of getting ready for a trip.
A Record Worth Keeping
There's also something about having a beautiful digital record of your wardrobe over time — the pieces you've collected, the things that have meant something to you. It feels like a little archive of your personal style! Something worth holding onto and maybe even passing down to your daughters one day.
And speaking of daughters, mine got so inspired watching me photograph everything that she took photos of her own clothes, cut out all the tops and bottoms separately, and made her own paper dress-up book where she could mix and match outfits as the app does. In our household, we love Alta!
